Essex is a non-metropolitan on the eastern part of England. It is comprised of 14 districts, two of which are unitary and the district of Chelmsford being its county town.
Origin
The origins of the name “Essex” dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It came from Eastseaxe, an Old English name that also happens to be the eastern kingdom of the Saxons. It literally means “east Saxons”.
Governance
As mentioned earlier, there are 14 local government districts namely Basildon, Maldon, Harlow, Braintree, Tendring, Castle Point, Thurrock, Brentwood, Southend-on Sea, Uttlesford, Colchester, Rochford, Epping Forest and Chelmsford. Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock are the two unitary districts that form part of the county but are not subject to its council control
Majority of the land is dedicated to agriculture, while industry is limited to the southern part of it. Located at Thurrock is Lakeside Shopping Centre, one of the first out-of-town shopping centers in England. Brentwood is home to the European headquarters of Ford Motor Company. Harlow is the center for science, electronics and pharmaceutical businesses. Chelmsford was also a significant location for electronics, and is home to Marconi, which was bought by Ericsson of Sweden since the year 2005. Chelmsford was also the center for finance, as it is the location for many companies and establishments that offer financial services such as insurance for cars, homes, and personal insurance, loans, different mortgage types such as buy-to-let mortgage, base rate trackers mortgage, variable rate or fixed rate mortgage, refinance options such as bad credit loans, remortgage, second mortgages, and more. According to statistics, Essex has 18,579 housing units. Only 5,528 of these units are without mortgage.
