Did you know the following about your town Coggeshall….
Coggeshall is a small town in Essex, comprised only of almost 4,000 residents. During the year 1998 and for three consecutive years beginning 2001, it won the award for Essex Best Kept Village. In 2003 also, it was named Village of The Year in Eastern England and Home Counties.
Origin
The following are the different theories on where the town got its name:
1.) In 1631, Weever wrote something about a monument found on Coccillway. He though that Coccill was a lord of that place during the Roman days and the corruption of this name gave birth to the name Coggeshall.
2.) According to Philip Morant, it was a corruption of the name Cocks-hall, supporting his theory with the Abbey’s seal that features 3 cockerels.
3.) According to Beaumonts Peter, it was dedicated to St. Peter and a cockerel was used as a symbol of this dedication.
4.) Another theory of Peter is that it could have originated from the red-colored shrub called Coccus, whose color is pronounced Coch.
5.) According to Margaret Gelling, the name has something to do with the town’s landscape. Coggeshall is somewhat a sunken position. She reasons that “hall
comes from “halh”, a word of Anglo-Saxon origin that means hollow or nook, therefore creating “Cogg’s nook”, matching the sunken position.
