Founded in 1871, Clacton-on-Sea is the biggest town of Tendring, a district of Essex.

History

Hereunder is a timeline that relates some of the important events in the early history of the town.

400,000 BC – development of early flake instruments called Clactonian tools
900 BC – the Celts set up a village
500 AD – the Saxons set up residence known as “Clacc Inga Ton” which means “the village of Clacc’s people” (Clacc is the name of the leader of the Saxons during that time)

Industry

Staying true to its name, it is actually a seaside resort that became very popular during the ‘60s and ‘70s. Today, however, the beaches are popular only during the summer. Clacton-on-Sea also has a golf course, an airfield, a pleasure pier and a number of caravan parks. It also has two theatres and a shopping centre.

Every year, a weeklong Clacton carnival is held during the second Saturday of the month of August. In addition, an aerial display called the Clacton Airshow is done on Thursday and Friday before the August Bank Holiday takes place. This involves aircrafts, both historic and modern, such as the Hurricane, Jaguar, Spitfire, Lancaster, Red Arrows and wing walkers.
