Did you know the following about your town Canvey Island….

Canvey Island is an island of the Thames estuary that has been reclaimed and is now a civil parish. It is separated from the southern part of the Essex mainland by a system of streams. It is disposed to intense floods since it lies below sea level. However, this did not prevent people from living there since the Romans invaded Britain.

Significant Events

In the year 1953, a flood devastated Canvey Island, leaving 58 families mourning for a family member who has died. Thirteen thousand islanders also had to temporarily evacuate. This flood was called the North Sea Flood.

Industry

Its land was primarily dedicated to agriculture until it became Britain’s fastest-growing seaside resort during the 20th century. Canvey Island also played a significant role in the industry of petrochemicals. It was actually the site of the world’s very first shipping of liquefied natural gas by container ship.

Government

Canvey is a district of Essex. Currently, it holds two seats on the County Council of Essex. As of 2009, member of the Independent Party Brian Wood represents the East seat while Ray Howard of The Conservative Party represents the West seat.
