Did you know the following about your town Brentwood….

Brightlingsea

Brightlingsea is part of Tendring, one of the 14 districts of Essex. It lies at the mought of the River Colne, and is situated about mid-way bwteen Clacton-onSea and Colchester. Its total population is approximately 8,500.

Fishery and shipbuilding are the traditional industries of Brightlingsea. When these industries experienced a decline, however, the town became largely a retirement destination and Colchester’s dormitory town.

Twinning

For several years, Brightlingsea was twinned with Marennes, Charente-Maritime (a French oyster fishery port). However, their relationship fell into abandonment.
Significant Events

During the 1990s, many people protested against the port’s exporting of live animals to be slaughtered in Europe. They believed that the conditions in which these animals were exported were inhumane and merciless. The campaigns began on January 16, 1995 and lasted till the 25th of October 1995. Throughout this 9-month duration, more than 150 convoys passed through town, and about 250,000 animals were exported to Europe. Twenty-eight of these were destroyed by M.A.F.F., twenty-four died, and thirty-eight unable to be exported. The police were able to arrest 598 individuals, 421 of which were local residents. The protests won in the end and the export of live animals was put to an end. These series of protests became known as the “Battle of Brightlingsea”.
